I like thinking about physics. In Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, people are shown their insignificance in terms of the universe. This makes them go insane. As much as I love Douglas Adams, I could never see this happening to me. The fact my life is tiny takes the pressure off. It's restful.
In midwifery, we have no such luck. What we do is immensely important. But I have something that may help you relax into it. I was reading a new physics paper suggesting they may have found the universe's mysterious ‘dark energy’. It might be the stuff that’s in black holes. Physicists suggest this because the amount of black hole stuff and missing energy in the universe is the same. This means these scattered black holes could be linked to each other and how the universe works.
Like with the black holes, I think our own mysterious energy wells are linked. We’re all in a vast system together. Doing some work to become a calmer, happier person in practice changes the whole system, and when that energy is passed along, every midwife is a little better off. If someone is struggling and their mass becomes heavy and abusive, that pushes the whole system away. Our universe starts flying apart.
I find it reassuring that human systems, made up of connections and relationships, match the basic realities of the universe. Do your bit, work on yourself and practice, and know that will impact the system as a whole. But also, you have limitations. You are one of many, so if you’re feeling dodgy one day, that might be nothing to do with you but instead down to the system dragging you down. Is this depressing? I don’t think so. I think it’s true. It keeps us on track with boundaries, and the old prayer, '𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘴𝘥𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘰 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦.'
To your needs,
Ellie.

In part I'm writing this series to help launch my new book, ‘Becoming a Midwife: A Student’s Guide’. It's out 23/2/23.
