Trauma is non-linear, and we shouldnโ€™t rank it. It all depends on the patient and their support, and the team around you. Iโ€™ve given hyperemesis care that was more upsetting than being there for the big obstetric emergencies. Even when itโ€™s something straight out of PROMPT, I often find itโ€™s not the PPH but the paperwork afterwards thatโ€™s the challenge. When thereโ€™s a second to sit down and think about things is when Iโ€™ll sometimes have a delayed reaction. โฃ

Anyway, this week, in particular, itโ€™s not the extra hours helping out or feeling like a fool for forgetting things; itโ€™s that Iโ€™ve had to throw away food from my Tesco order because Iโ€™ve been overwhelmed and haven't kept an eye on the fridge. Midwifery is a big and sometimes deceptively distressing job. But itโ€™s the eventual impact on your life that can feel the hardest. If youโ€™re recovering after some tough shifts, exercise, watching a good heroโ€™s journey type movie, or doing something creative are good ways of reminding your body that youโ€™re safe again. Even though climate change is terrifying, perhaps forgive yourself if a few things in your fridge have gone out of date. Thereโ€™s always composting.โฃ
