Study Skills Session
I run occasional group sessions on study skills based on my book ‘Becoming a Midwife: a student’s guide’ (Macmillan Education). However I would always suggest you make use of your university library academic advisors and tools available to you like studiosity. You may also be able to send around 500 words of your work to tutors for comment before you complete work and submit. In exceptional circumstances I will offer a single one to one session - I make this more about your ongoing well-being in midwifery and your degree than a grade (though of course the object would be supporting you to pass well)
Show insight into recent reports, care bundles and research
We’ll need to describe your ability to practice in both midwife-led and obstetric-led settings. Describing how much experience you have gained as a student and how you will rise to the challenge of being a registered member of staff is key. A lot of what’s needed is confidence and the ability to put yourself forward.
2. Show insight into recent reports, care bundles and research
You’ll need to show you know the direction your desired trust is going and the ethos they work towards. We’ll work out how best to mention current research and how they apply to your practice will help the recruitment staff imagine you working as an excellent member of the team. Showing your own midwifery philosophy and goals for your career with strengthen your application further.
3. Address structure, grammar, spelling and proofreading
Once you have a solid plan or draft, you can go away and work on your application. After that, send your application back to me. I’m happy to proofread or otherwise help, anything under 20 minutes is fine.
Fill out the Google Form below and check availability using my online calendar. I aim to get you booked in within 48 hours, or in some cases it may be possible to do this sooner.
What Will You Gain?
The easiest way to show you what we’ll cover is via some practice interview questions. Have a look at the following:
Initial Questions -
Why would you like to be a midwife at our trust?
Tell us about your training.
What has been the most challenging thing about training?
Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
Questions about Practice -
What do you know about revalidation?
How would you manage a busy antenatal ward?
Tell us about how you might manage a day you’re not enjoying at work?
Obstetric Emergency Questions -
Scenario based obstetric emergencies discussion
And always remember…
1. BE YOURSELF
People get tangled up in terms of nerves but it's actually very simple. Make your answers about what you can offer women, birthing people and families in your care and what you say will show your midwifery potential. I'll show you how to find your ability in your skills and experiences and we can add some midwifery knowledge if this is what's needed. You can be your own vulnerable, passionate self in these interviews. In fact, that's often how you'll perform best.
2. PRACTICE
Most of us have precious few opportunities to practice interview technique. Putting yourself under pressure in a low stakes environment will help you gain skill in answering questions on the spot.
3. BUILD YOUR FUTURE CAREER
Talking about a topic you’re passionate about can be a powerful way of communicating your ability. Most of us are too close to pick up on our biggest strengths and how they come across. Identifying yours will help you approach your interview with confidence.
If there's anything not on this page you'd like to talk about or cover, that's fine, just let me know when you fill out the form below.
What People Are Saying
“Ellie's personal statement coaching service was invaluable, she goes to great lengths to help you write an amazing statement, helping with word count, sourcing information for you to read and include and is supportive throughout her feedback.
It really helped me deal with the stress of writing a personal statement and start to enjoy writing it again and I'm certain that the admissions tutors will see that.”
— Sara
“I would recommend Ellie’s service to anyone to get to the interview stage. Entering this process, it seemed terrifying and impossible, but Ellie gave me the help and confidence I needed to show the admissions tutors my skills.
Ellie doesn’t write your statement for you, but she helps you to showcase the best of yourself in what you have already written. I now have 5/5 interviews and an offer (still waiting to hear back from the rest!) and cannot believe it!
Without Ellie’s services, I don’t think I would be in this amazing position - the investment is so worth it as I know that I won’t have to go through this process all over again ? Thank you so much, Ellie!”
— Jennifer
“The only difference between the first year I applied and the second year was Ellie. The first year I wrote what I thought was a good personal statement and sent it off with fingers crossed. I didn't get invited to any interviews and was devastated. After licking my wounds I decided to have another go at applying.
This year I received invites to 3 universities for interview. I withdrew because I received an offer from my top choice! My only regret is not using Ellie's service the first year I applied.”
— Jennifer
“I found my second draft was ten times better. I came across much more organised with my approach and it allowed me to remember to cover multiple aspects of my experience to present myself as a more well-rounded candidate.
Secondly, Ellie gives lots of suggestions of alternative material to read to provide further useful information regarding the role of the midwife, rules and standards and industry research.
I took the opportunity to do lots of further reading based on these suggestions. I truly believe it helped me to come across as a knowledgeable candidate and developed my confidence going in to interview.”

“Ellie recently helped me with my personal statement. I just wanted to say a huge thank you, I have already received 5 out of 5 interviews! I could have never imagined that. I truly admire how much effort Ellie puts into supporting every statement!”
