Finding a Structure
First of all, if you find structure difficult, don’t despair, many of us do. It may be that you’re hyper-focused on detail and you need to zoom out a little, but the fact you’ve thought so deeply will mean once a structure appears, your essay will be high quality.
After I’ve done a fair amount of reading, I’ll end up with a huge Google document of ideas. I’ll choose the top 20% of these, and then print them, cut them out and move them around on the floor until I find a good structure, and then I’ll blu tack them onto a big board. This might be over-engineered for you but I think it shows what you need to do mentally to get a structure that flows. (Scroll down for a closer look at the images.)
This was the day I put together a structure for a 10,000-word chapter on essay writing.
You might not need to do this for assignments with a smaller word count, but you may want to try it just because it teaches you a lot about structure.
I find the writing-up process to be a lot easier if I have a physical plan next to me.
