<image:title>All Blog Posts - Julia Reissmann: Perinatal Counsellor - Julia Reissmann is one of the most interesting people I talked to for this book. To be a perinatal counsellor employed by the NHS you need to be registered with a regulatory body and have experience, and to some extent, be in the right place at the right time. Trainee counsellors also need to participate in therapy themselves and that’s an extra cost you’d need to pay for. Having an MA puts you in a better position for jobs. It’s quite the commitment but it sounds like an incredible career.</image:title>

<image:title>All Blog Posts - Carinna Griffiths: Labour Ward Coordinator, Midwifery Lecturer - I wanted to interview Carinna because she has built a very successful career at a young age. She was a labour ward coordinator and then a midwifery lecturer within 5 years of qualification. Aspiring and student midwives sometimes think if they didn’t do midwifery straight out of school then they don’t have a decent shot at a high level career. Nothing could be further from the truth.</image:title>

<image:title>All Blog Posts - Blog on Failure and Repeating Second Year - an Interview with Student Midwife Olivia - If you fail an assignment on a midwifery degree, you will get an opportunity to try again. If you go on to fail an assignment in that module for the second time, you will generally need to repeat the year. Olivia and I have talked a few times because she found herself in this position. It was a little more complicated than that, some deadlines weren’t made clear, and there were other factors...but the outcome was that Olivia needs to repeat her second year. After a rough few weeks, Olivia discovered a few things: a) there’s hardly any information out there for people who are taking some time out from a midwifery degree (hence this blog), b) after feeling horribly alone for a while, she found quite a few others who are in the same position, and c) having a mandatory break from midwifery is actually the best thing that could have happened. I’ve changed Olivia’s name and some identifiable details to protect her anonymity, and of course, this has been posted with her permission.</image:title>

<image:caption>Ross and Wilson Anatomy and Physiology in Health and Illness (2014) Anne Waugh and Allison Grant A gorgeous, clear human biology guide with easy to read text explaining what’s happening under and on your skin. If you enjoy a good illustration or are one of those visual learners I’ve heard so much about, you’ll like this. Great for the basics of A + P that you'll likely have an exam on in the first year of midwifery training.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Anatomy & Physiology for Midwives 3 (2011) Jane Coad and Mary Dunstall I had the old version of this back when I was a student, and it’s helpful for exam revision, and for learning all the essential stuff you need to know to get good clinical skills. As you’d expect from the title, this, as opposed to the ‘Ross and Wilson’ guide above, is more midwifery focussed. If you already have lots of human bio knowledge, and just want the midwifery Anatomy + Physiology, this could be a good choice for you. Again, excellent explanations and visual learning support.</image:caption>

Great for new student midwives as a go-to guide in your bag.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mayes Midwifery (2011) Sue Macdonald and Julia Magill-Cuerden This is one of the two big midwifery textbooks on the market. It’s pretty amazing really, a huge attempt to cover every midwifery topic in a good amount of detail. I have old colleagues and lecturers who have written chapters. The problem is evidence goes out of date so fast. The most recent version of Mayes is the 14th edition, out in 2011. These big textbooks can be good to give you a grounding, but I’d suggest not trying to read the whole thing or take every last word of it as gospel. I’d also buy second hand – see the end of this post for why.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Myles Midwifery (2014) Jayne Marshall and Maureen Raynor This is the other big midwifery textbook. I've got a video on choosing between them here, but essentially they’re similar, just written by different midwifery experts. If you have to choose between Mayes and Myles, go for the one that’s most recent. These kind of books are about giving you an overview. Again, second hand is best and cheaper… Both Mayes and Myles come with cool e-features like quizzes, tests, online versions and so on if you buy them new. But I suspect you won't be at a disadvantage to get second-hand books and skip the extras.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The New Midwifery: Science and Sensitivity in Practice (2006) Lesley Ann Page and Rona McClandish This stands out for me when I remember books I had as a student midwife. It’s lovely. I think about it kind of like a textbook for people who like to read and learn via story telling. The tone is more conversational and more woman-centred than many textbooks, with case studies and quotes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Midwifery Essentials (2009) Helen Baston, Jennifer Hall, and Alyson Henley-Einion There are four of these books: ‘Basics’, ‘Antenatal’, ‘Intrapartum’ and ‘Postnatal’. They’re actually based on articles from ‘The Practising Midwife’ – which is a great journal focussed on actionable advice for midwives. They’re evidence-based, reference the NMC, and are clear and easy. If you feel you learn best from reading about the hands-on stuff most of all, these will be great. The downside is they are now 7 years old, so if I was a student midwife, I’d only buy them if I felt they were right for my learning style.</image:caption>

An Independent Midwife (who works outside the NHS for private clients) with so much to give and teach, Virginia is an entrepreneur at heart, which is not something often enough associated with midwifery. Her drive, passion, commitment, and ability to think for herself make her one of the modern heroes of midwifery. This book proves she’s a great author too.</image:caption>

It’s set in Biblical times, and the writing is from the pov of Dinah, daughter of Jacob (The Jacob who was the father of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat). <image:caption>New Walk (2018) Ellie Durant This is my midwifery novel - my favourite review is here: 'I absolutely loved it! Chloe is a very strong and relatable character, and her story is emotional and inspiring. It's uplifting in parts and heartbreaking in others, which is everything I look for in a good book! I love how Chloe sticks up for what she believes in and how the author has packed so many controversial, real life issues into her story such as drug addiction, abortion, bereavement and relationship issues. This is a fantastic coming of age novel, whether you're interested in midwifery or not, but as an aspiring midwife, it was also very insightful and educational in parts. It has a running theme of promoting normality and informed choice, and shows many of the challenges to achieving this. I can't wait for the next instalment!' Oh, and if you’re getting into midwifery, my own book is ‘Becoming A Student Midwife: The Survival Guide For Passionate Applicants’.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Ellie</image:title>
<image:caption>I am a registered midwife and Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA), offering independent birth reflection sessions for parents who want to better understand their birth experience. I previously worked at The Rosie Hospital, where I ran the Birth Afterthoughts service as a Band 6 midwife. I supported parents to talk through their births and worked closely with consultant midwives, PALS and midwifery managers, and perinatal mental health services around concerns, complaints, and complex care. I now work independently, providing a calm, compassionate space to reflect on birth experiences. I support parents to understand clinical decision-making, make sense of their maternity notes, and explore their options for future births. While I am not a mental health professional, my work is grounded in trauma-informed midwifery care, and I have extensive experience sensitively and clearly explaining what happened from a medical perspective. My practice is shaped by ongoing training in trauma-informed care, including regular attendance at Trauma in Birth and Marcé Society Perinatal Mental Health conferences. I am committed to equity, anti-racism, and providing safe, inclusive care for LGBTQIA+ families, and I receive regular professional supervision from an experienced counsellor. More recently, I became a mum to my daughter, Marianne - an experience that has deepened my understanding of how birth experiences can stay with us, and how important it is to feel heard and supported.</image:caption>

<image:title>Books - Becoming a Midwife</image:title>
<image:caption>‘I’m officially back in my midwifery course. I had failed a module 3 times and had to defer. At the time, there weren’t many resources on how to write academically for midwifery/the degree that were user friendly and understandable. As soon as your latest book came out, I ordered it and studied it religiously. I used it as my guide for my first piece of university work back following my deferral. I got my results today, and achieved an 80 (first class!) Not only have I gone from failing academically to achieving such a fantastic mark, it’s also the first time in my life I have ever achieved anything above a 2:2. I absolutely believe that reading your latest book helped me so much in understanding what is required for midwifery related academic work, alongside your kindness and support during our online meetings giving me the confidence to keep going through my year out.’ - Student midwife Maddie</image:caption>

<image:title>Books - Becoming a Midwife</image:title>
<image:caption>‘This book is invaluable to any passionate potential student midwife! I am so pleased a local midwife recommended it when I was discussing my interest in entering the profession. The book is well written and easy to follow. It is filled with important information to help from the start of your application through to interview skills, tips and techniques. I now feel confident this is the right choice for me and that I can succeed!’ - Donna</image:caption>

<image:title>Books - Becoming a Midwife</image:title>
<image:caption>‘A compelling, accessible and educational read for both those who do and do not practice midwifery. As somebody who does not, New Walk truly gave me a new respect for the profession. New Walk focuses on Chloe as she starts her journey as a student midwife, partly inspired by her late mother. Tackling subjects from the day-to-day midwifery tasks, to complex ethical issues, to the intriguing personal life of Chloe, New Walk is almost impossible to put down. Durant weaves her plot together beautifully. You can feel the pressure building on Chloe as her life starts buckling around her; her drug abusing father, her troublesome sister and distant boyfriend, all on top of an incredibly stressful workload. The particular strengths from the book lie in the pure sense wonder of childbirth, the catharsis in the aftermath; a feeling which is hard to capture. The build up and release. Durant also captures personal details beautifully. The relationship between Chloe and Christopher feels realistic, and very sad. Doomed early on with the protagonist's inability to strike a decent home-life balance; the fault of the character, or the demand from the profession? I always feel like I have read something really good when it causes me to think, even hours after I've put the book down. I can't get it out of my head. This is certainly the case from New Walk, and I absolutely can't wait to see what the next instalment brings.’</image:caption>

<image:title>Time Management</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve spent the last 6 months as a return to practice midwife which is a very similar experience to being a student. Alongside this, I’ve been running my business and writing a book. I’m pleased to say I got signed off with ‘outstanding’ and will soon be taking my post as a registered midwife. This has been an excellent way of testing the Time Management for Student Midwives chapter of my book. To write this I reviewed lots of productivity and learning resources and research and then made a list of what worked and what didn’t in the context of midwifery. Though midwifery is never easy there were plenty of excellent ideas that worked incredibly well. In this hour-long Time Management Workshop we will: Use self-efficacy theory to find way of managing everything you have to do, on your terms Look at tools like 80:20 and work with a real student midwife to-do list You’ll come away with strategies for when you’re really up against it and review the best of what I’ve learnt from my student midwife community Overall this session is about building trust with yourself and helping you succeed in a way that feels right to you</image:caption>

<image:caption>I know midwifery is a competitive course to get onto but first of all some reassurance: midwifery applicants tend to be far more capable than they think. However, if you’d like some further assistance, what I offer helps with confidence, midwifery knowledge and seeing your strengths. I also want you to have great social support as you take this very important step. This year I’m running a Midwifery Application Club that will take you through the whole process.</image:caption>

<image:title>Essays on a Gut Level - Essays - why are they so hard? We rarely slow down and think about what the work we’re required to do actually means. Spending three years writing my new book ‘Becoming a Midwife - The Survival Guide For Passionate Student and Newly Qualified Midwives’ has helped me do a deep dive on the academic and practical bits of becoming a midwife. I'm also trying to live a bit more slowly (vestibular migraines and ambition are sometimes not a good mix) and this means I've had the opportunity to think even more deeply. I believe that essays writing is an art form. You need to summon a piece of work into existence using a series of judgement calls around what to include and at what level of detail. Most study guides won’t lead with this point. I think they’re concerned that you’ll forget the evidence if they talk about creativity. But though we should aim to be as objective as possible when writing academically, all knowledge is contestable and there is no certainty. This means what you’re attempting with an essay assignment is creativity, with all the psychological challenges that comes with it.</image:title>

<image:title>Presentations - Giving presentations that have an angle you’re truly interested in and a story you want to tell I’ve presented at quite a few conferences and often feel out of my depth, especially when I’m sharing a stage with professionals with many years of experience or far higher academic credentials than me. There are a few ideas I come back to. One is that there are different personality types out there. Some of us are not naturally drawn to showing our work to big groups. If this is you, you may feel ‘why would anyone want to hear from me?’ and that by asking you to stand up in a packed room, you’re being asked to change your nature. The good news is that in my experience, the work you produce will often be thoughtful, interesting and considered from many angles, even if you need a bit of a push to share it. It may help to see it as an occasion where you’re choosing to be generous and share your thoughts with the audience. Conversely, if you are someone who is excited to share what you’ve found, that can be awesome, but if you get taken by surprise by a question from your audience, or get a slightly lower grade than you expected you can get a vulnerability hangover which can be difficult to recover from. As I grew up in an extroverted household, but am basically an introvert, I am a mix between the two extremes, and my issue is often an internal battle between my conditioned and natural personalities! Whatever your feelings about presenting, this seminar will be about exploring what you feel comfortable sharing and I’d love to think your strategy through with you.</image:title>

<image:title>Knowing What Essay Writing Is on a Gut Level for Student Midwives - We rarely slow down and think about what the work we’re required to do actually means. Spending four years writing my new book ‘Becoming a Midwife’ has helped me do a deep dive on the academic and practical bits of becoming a midwife. I believe that essay writing is an art form. This means what you’re attempting with an essay assignment is creativity, with all the psychological challenges that comes with it. I will definitely be sharing ideas to you get through an essay faster and get a better grade, because you do have job to do. But I also want to examine the task of writing an essay and what it means for you as a midwife.</image:title>

<image:title>Safe House Sessions</image:title>
<image:caption>It was 1st July 2022, and I had just finished writing my most recent book. After four years of slogging through the project, the final email with the typescript had gone off to my editor, Helen. The house was covered in post-it notes, brown paper, and chapter outlines blue-tacked to plastic boards. My partner had suffered through two minor breakdowns and one cancelled holiday, and I never wanted to see another Harvard reference again. But it was done.</image:caption>

<image:title>Safe House Sessions - My current book, the Bloomsbury education guide, must have been a very strange project for my editor, Helen. I didn’t know until late on, but she was pregnant while working on it. I sent the final typescript on her last day before maternity leave. The goal of making that last day carried me through gracefully to the end. But as soon as I got a confirmation email from Helen and the work was done, I started to descend into listlessness and, yes, a little bit of a migraine.</image:title>

<image:title>Safe House Sessions - I am not good at moving slowly. I dislike the transitions that happen when a significant shift needs to occur. It is immensely frustrating and a little frightening when I don’t have a big project on the go and rolling forward. That’s actually why I like writing books - they give you somewhere to hide. You can’t finish the whole thing in a day, no one would expect you to. So it’s acceptable to make a tiny bit of progress each day. That’s the kind of project I live for. I have been considering starting a one-to-one listening service for midwives and students for years. I’ve done the personal statement/interview thing since 2012 and have an established practice around this kind of support, and I enjoy it.</image:title>

<image:title>Safe House Sessions - In many ways, writing the book was a way of testing the water. I’m a little embarrassed to admit it, but writing a book for a big publisher like Bloomsbury can make you feel like you have some credibility. Also, broaching subjects like failure in practice, bullying, trauma and grief, and mental illness and so on are a bit of a downer in some people’s point of view. Sneaking them into an education guide with lots of overtly positive and helpful information seemed like an excellent way to Trojan Horse it to begin with…</image:title>

<image:title>Delivery Unit Skills for Sensitive People - This is a course that lets you stroll around my head and my thoughts on complex intrapartum care. It covers the basic skills needed to offer brilliant care on delivery unit, including written what I prioritise, and materials/details on the notes I hold while I’m on shift and how I access them easily. In this course I am trying to unite the stuff we need to get done to offer safe and excellent care, along with the need to look after our own feelings and ‘midwife the midwife’.</image:title>

<image:title>Birth Reflections</image:title>
<image:caption>ellie@midwifediaries.com I am a registered midwife and Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA), offering independent birth reflection sessions for parents who want to better understand their birth experience. I previously worked at The Rosie Hospital, where I ran the Birth Afterthoughts service as a specialist midwife. I supported parents to talk through their births and worked closely with consultant midwives, PALS and midwifery managers, and perinatal mental health services around concerns, complaints, and complex care. Contact me via ellie@midwifediaries.com for more information and a short free phonecall to see if I can help.</image:caption>

<image:title>Personal Statement Workshop for Aspiring Midwives</image:title>
<image:caption>Over half of midwives often think about leaving their job (RCM). This breaks my heart, especially as in my career as a writer and community builder, I come across midwives who love their work all the time. Often, thinking about leaving midwifery is just a way of thinking through the changes we must make at work. But it’s uncomfortable keeping going in practice without taking action. Let’s think through your options outside of midwifery, the reasons why you may be thinking about leaving, and how to decide on the right path for you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Committed Uncertainty - The Truth is More Complicated Than ‘The System is Broken’</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m a midwife who for a long time could not figure out a philosophy that fit my experience of working in the NHS. Over the years, I’ve heard things like ‘the NHS is amazing, we should all appreciate it’ (often said with a positive edge, implying that every client should feel grateful for what they get) or ‘the system is broken’ (with the implication that it's beyond repair and the NHS can never get it right). But to me, the truth is so much more complicated than either of these descriptions.</image:caption>
