I'm proud of Sophie Karla Wizik, one of our moderators from The Secret Community For Midwives In The Making, who broadcasted live last night on the topic of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
She's so passionate and eloquent about this subject.
I know many wanted to catch up on this so I'm reposting here. It's brilliant information on a distressing topic.
I think the key thing to remember about FGM is that however much we want to say 'this is wrong! There's something wrong with societies who do this!' that's not helpful.
Shame is not going to change things. Understanding communities and offering support so the subject can be brought into the open will. You can only make helpful laws and begin to identify women and girls at risk when you can discuss it.
Thanks, Sophie! Huge congratulations on getting your place as a student midwife.
If you'd like to leave a comment letting Sophie know what the most important fact or insight you gained from her video was, that would be amazing.
I hope you have a wonderful week, Ellie x
