Often, doing my Midwifery Training, I felt like I was being swept off my feet by a wave of essays, clinical placement, and practical exams.
And I was trying to have a life at the same time!

Successful midwifery students and learners don't grapple with every single source out there. Here are my favourite academic resources for midwives to get good, evidence based information for essays and other projects.
I've started a group for Midwives in the Making on Facebook. You can find it here, and if you click 'join' I'll find your request.
I started The Secret Community For Midwives In The Making group (and in fact my site in general) because I believe advice for people wanting to become midwives, student midwives, and midwives themselves should be high quality, uncensored, and free where possible. (more…)
Hi midwives and midwives in the making, I hope you're having a good week. Whether you're on days, nights, split shifts or just a crazy any hour schedule midwifery can get pretty exhausting, but I hope you're getting enough rest and spending some time on just you.
This is a Midwife Motivation Monday, just for you midwives and midwives in the making, to help you remember how exciting the career is 🙂

Hi Midwives and Midwives in the Making, I hope you've had a fantastic week. I hope you've felt supported by your colleagues and in turn supported your women through the astonishing process of having children. I hope you're getting enough rest and having enough good experiences to keep you sailing through the challenges.
I've had a rather life changing week; I have moved back to the UK from New Zealand, in part to make sure MidwifeDiaries gets much more attention from me. Stand by for new stuff!

Hi Midwives and Midwives in the Making, this post is a good excuse to drop you a line reminding you all to avoid midwifery burnout! I had a long chat with a friend of mine who works in the NHS this week. It's so easy to get to the point of exhaustion when we do manic hours and manic work.

Hi, welcome to another Midwife Motivation Monday. This week I'm looking at a topic I get asked a lot about. Many midwives and student midwives experience stress as a result of coping with midwifery emergencies.

In case you're not one of MidwifeDiaries' small but exclusive group of 70 subscribers (70? MADNESS! Where did you all come from?? Hello, it's very lovely you're here), and you haven't come across Midwife Motivation Mondays before, I'll explain. Monday is the day I post to inspire and motivate midwives (and midwives in the making). I generally take a topic that makes me remember why I'm so excited by midwifery and share it.
But I'm having a hard time with that today....

Hello Midwives and Midwives in the making, this is another Midwife Motivation Monday! I post every Monday to help keep us focused on all the privileges and rewarding moments of our profession. To prevent me feeling like a deranged midwifery motivational speaker just saying 'midwifery is awesome....it's just so awesome!' over and over, each Monday I pick an inspirational or motivational topic backed up by hard science.

This is the first in a two part series on midwifery essay writing. Part Two, which is on how to actually write your essay, can be found here.
This post is on getting your motivation together to start your midwifery essay writing.

Welcome to another Midwife Motivation Monday, the place to get midwifery mojo back. This job can give you some of the best experiences of your life - but it can also be very hard work at times! On MidwifeDiaries.com, Monday is the day I try to write to give myself (and hopefully you!) perspective on how important and valued midwives really are.

I'm really excited about today's post. Delayed cord clamping after birth is a really crucial topic for midwives.

It was a bit of a 'meh' post (people bang on about skin to skin all the time) but I wanted to write it because skin to skin contact is really important. Supporting skin to skin is also a lovely bit of being a midwife and worth celebrating.

Hey, I hope you've had a really good week working towards being, or working as a midwife!
This post is another in the 'Midwife Motivation Mondays' category. These posts are a bit like Radio 4's 'thought for the day', except not religious, and specifically for midwifery, because we need encouragement and inspiration like nobody else.

For those of you that haven't run away, thanks for reading on. It's you open minded midwives I need to talk to anyway!
There's a good case to be made that perfect documentation is not as crucial as we all think.
This post is a Midwife Motivation Monday! Monday is the day I publish posts for inspiration in this crazy, life-affirming and life-expanding job of ours.
Coping with criticism of midwifery practice can be really difficult. Whether you're a new student or an experienced practitioner, we all get criticised, and it can be emotionally draining. So if you feel like you could handle improving your reaction to criticism of midwifery practice, this post is for you.

Midwifery is a profession that keeps up with the times, and that means we now use computers constantly. Some midwifery units are even paper free, with laptops and ipads for notetaking.
I want to save you lots of your precious time by showing you these midwifery focused computer tricks.
Erg, nightshift is hard. I tend to cope ok on shift - just about - but for two days after I'm fatigued. All I seem to be able to do is sit and watch youtube videos.
Well, not quite, I've done a bit of housework today but when I got up this morning I realised we'd lost the sink, the carpet and the spare room to general clutter so I didn't really have a choice. It feels much nicer to be sleepy in a tidy room.
